This recipe for this episode of our cooking show comes from Nina Kirkland, a very good friends of our show. The original recipe can be found at Videoculinary.ru (in Russian). Thank you Nina! I am sure we could made it better. The bacon we used had more meat than fat and that probably make the world of a difference. The end result was very impressive! We are going to make again Braised Cabbage Bohemian Style for sure!
- 2 pounds green cabbage, shredded or thinly sliced
- about 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 medium onion (about 7-8 ounces) diced into small cubes
- 3 ½ ounces smoked bacon, sliced into 1″ pieces
- 2 teaspoons of salt (or to taste)
- ½ tsp ground black pepper
- 3 tsp sugar
- juice of half a lemon
- 1 tsp coriander seeds – lightly crushed
- 3-4 tsp flour
- In a deep fry or sauce pan with a thick bottom, warm the oil, then add the bacon and onion. Fry until the onion is transparent.
- Add the shredded cabbage, stir. Cover the pot with a lid and simmer on low heat, stirring occasionally, for about 30 minutes.
- After the 30 minutes, add the salt, black pepper, coriander seeds, sugar and lemon juice. Sprinkle the flour on top and mix everything together well.
- Cover with a lid and simmer over low heat for an additional 7-10 minutes.
- To serve: place the braised cabbage in a deep dish and serve as either a separate dish or as a side dish to meat.
